What HotspotCheck does

HotspotCheck is a defensive Wi-Fi safety advisor. When you tap Check this Wi-Fi, it reviews visible safety indicators on the network you are currently using — gateway warnings, DNS behaviour, captive-portal clues, local device discovery, and other signals iOS allows — then scores risk for your context and explains what to do next.

It is calm, honest, and educational. HotspotCheck does not crack passwords, exploit routers, scan nearby networks in the background, or claim to guarantee safety.

Who is HotspotCheck for?

HotspotCheck is built for anyone who connects to Wi-Fi outside a fully trusted home network and wants practical guidance before sensitive logins.

  • Travellers using cafe, hotel, and airport Wi-Fi
  • Students on university or shared accommodation networks
  • Remote workers checking work-from-anywhere hotspots
  • Families reviewing Airbnb or holiday-rental Wi-Fi
  • Anyone improving home router hygiene
  • People who want plain-English safety advice, not jargon

Key features

Context-aware safety score

Choose home, cafe, hotel, airport, or other contexts so risk scoring matches how you are using the network.

Visible risk indicators

Review gateway, DNS, TLS, captive-portal, and connectivity checks with confidence levels and clear limitations.

Device discovery

See visible devices and services on the Wi-Fi you are connected to when you grant Local Network permission at scan time.

Plain-English recommendations

Get practical next steps such as switching to mobile data, using a VPN, or avoiding banking until conditions improve.

Local scan history and export

Keep reports on your iPhone, export PDFs when you need them, and delete all scan data from Settings.

Privacy-first by design

No analytics SDK, no developer backend, and no upload of SSIDs, device names, or scan history.

How HotspotCheck works

  1. Choose where you are connecting — cafe, hotel, home, or another context.
  2. Tap Check this Wi-Fi when you are ready. Permissions are requested only at scan time.
  3. Review your safety score, findings, discovered devices, and limitations.
  4. Follow recommendations for banking, work logins, VPN use, or mobile data.
  5. Save or export the report locally, or delete history whenever you want.

Useful for

HotspotCheck supports everyday Wi-Fi safety decisions that are hard to judge from the Wi-Fi name alone.

  • Checking cafe or restaurant Wi-Fi before online banking
  • Reviewing hotel or Airbnb networks on arrival
  • Understanding whether a captive portal looks suspicious
  • Spotting visible gateway or DNS warning signs
  • Seeing what devices are visible on a shared network
  • Improving home router exposure awareness
  • Keeping a local record of past checks while travelling
  • Learning Wi-Fi safety basics in the Learn tab

Why use HotspotCheck?

Many network tools feel technical, aggressive, or surveillance-oriented. HotspotCheck is different: user-initiated, educational, and honest about what iPhone apps can and cannot see.

You get three full scans for free — including export, recommendations, and local history. Unlock unlimited checks with an annual subscription or lifetime purchase when you need the app regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is HotspotCheck?

HotspotCheck is a defensive Wi-Fi safety advisor for iPhone. It checks visible safety indicators on the network you are currently using and explains the results in plain English.

Does it guarantee my Wi-Fi is safe?

No. HotspotCheck is an educational tool. It checks visible indicators only and cannot guarantee that a network is safe or detect every device or risk.

What permissions does it need?

Local Network permission is requested only when you start a scan. Location (When In Use) may be needed so iOS can show the current Wi-Fi name and security details where required. Coordinates are not collected or stored.

Is my scan data uploaded?

No. Scan data stays on your iPhone unless you export or share a report yourself. The app has no analytics SDK and no developer-operated backend for scan history.

Is there a free version?

Yes. You receive three full scans for free. After that you can unlock unlimited scans with an annual subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase through Apple.

Who is HotspotCheck for?

It is designed for travellers, students, remote workers, families, and anyone who regularly uses shared or public Wi-Fi and wants practical guidance before sensitive logins.

Important notes

HotspotCheck is an educational Wi-Fi safety advisor. It is not a security guarantee, penetration test, or professional audit service. Results reflect visible indicators on the network you are connected to and may be incomplete if permissions are denied or iOS withholds Wi-Fi details.

The app does not use private APIs, crack passwords, exploit routers, or run hidden background scans. Always use your own judgement for banking, work, and personal accounts.

App Store release
